¿Por qué nadie dice que donde de verdad nacen los flujos en torno al arte contemporáneo es en los programas de actividades y no en los expositivos? - Oscar Abril

I hold a degree in Social Work from the University of Murcia and studied Social and Cultural Anthropology in Barcelona. With this background I have worked in very different environments with; prisoners, immigrants, women, children and teenagers, elderly, mentally disabled and many more. Although most of my jobs centered around education and field work in ethnography. On this occasion I lend my voice, my body and my ideas to the scenario of Manifesta 8, to work as a communicator and to channel understanding between the biennial, the artworks on show and the visitors.

I develop my artistic practice with the aver collective, which to the audience on first sight appears to be a collective that produces audiovisual art in a critical and poetical language, but in reality is based on the interest to integrate artistic behavior in daily life.

I understand the task of an Art Mediator as that of bringing the language of contemporary art closer to the public, as not to make art something for an intellectual elite only. To make everyone comfortable to talk about art. I think it is about working with broken institutional structures which traditionally limit the relationship between the creator and the spectator. The Art Mediators task is to break roles, to make the spectator identify himself with the artwork, not just as a consumer of culture, but with a growing need to speak one's mind.

I am especially interested in youngsters, I think we must pay special attention to working with them in relation to contemporary art. To help them to understand it's language as part of their daily lives. Society must wake up to allow art into life, to pose questions about established fake realities whihc blind the human condition. As such, I think art education is crucial in order to advance towards new paradigms.

I was born in Austria in 1982. I am a graduate of English and American Studies, Art History as well as Cultural Management and Art Mediation. In the frame of my studies I carried out a local in-depth research in Nanaimo, Canada for my master thesis on „Contemporary Expressions of U.S. and Canadian Indigenous Cultures. After my graduation I worked as a trainee at the European Centre of Modern Languages of the Council of Europe.

Concerning art mediation I have already gathered some valuable experience by working as a mediator in the Museum of Perception in Graz, and issuing mediation concepts for senior citizens for the Kunsthalle inVienna.

Not only being a visual artist but also the curator of my own exhibitions and art projects in co-operation with various African artists I have realized intercultural artistic workshops for asylumseekers and migrants using art as a means of integration building a bridge between different cultures.
